Women in Business network at Harvard

November 2016

During the weekend of October 15 and 16, members of Miami’s chapter of Women in Business spent some quality time in Cambridge, Massachusetts - yes, that’s right, at the famed Harvard University. Eleven members from Miami flew to attend the Intercollegiate Business Convention at the Ivy League school. In total, more than 1,000 women attended from 45 different countries, all striving to share their ambitions and passions for success.

This conference is nothing new for Harvard or Women in Business. This is the 12th year for the conference itself, and Miami’s chapter of WiB has attended for at least the last five years. The name of the game? Empowerment for collegiate women in all areas of business.

Lauren Allen, senior finance major and the president of Miami’s branch of Women in Business, said that the most important part of the weekend was being able to connect and network with other chapters. And although Lauren has already accepted a position in New York City with JP Morgan, the professional development aspect of a conference like this is unparalleled.

The keynote speakers were:

  • Helene D. Gayle, CEO, McKinsey Social Initiative
  • Marne Levine, COO, Instagram
  • In addition to the keynotes, there were several breakout panels, each led by a successful businesswoman ready to impart wisdom to the younger generation. Lauren, for example, attended a panel that discussed what you should wear to your interview, and one that was geared toward entrepreneurs.

“The main value you get out of event like this is exposure,” Lauren noted. “It’s important that people get a diverse experience and to hear all different types of career paths and ways that you can get involved. It’s easy to get caught up in the Miami bubble - but by attending conferences and networking with other like-minded individuals, you can become exposed to these different aspects of your career.”
